Exmoor Rotary: Club News

Club News on this page follows the main events in which the club has been involved this Rotary year - from July 2013 to June 2014.

Handover

Exmoor Rotary handover 2014The end of one Rotary year, the start of another.

Shown here is Gill passing the presidential chain of office to Terry, who is passing the President-Elect medal and ribbon to David.

Best wishes to all of them especially Gill who has had a splendid year and deserves a break!

Cheques were also presented to Abbeyfield Home, and to Morebath Village Hall from money raised by the 2013 Ironman.

Ironman Presentations

A number of presentations of cheques were made as a result of sponsorship of the Ironman 2013 event:

Morebath Village Hall (shown here) £500

Leukaemia Research £660, Children's Hospice SW £500, Calvert Trust £500, Exmoor Search & Rescue £500, Abbeyfield £250, and Dulverton Young People's Project £500.

The total awarded to charities in this area was £2750.

Bampton School Fete

The Club had a stand at Bampton's School fete held on June 21st in glorious warm sunshine - Alan is shown here coaching some young golf players!

Ironman UK

Again the Club assisted with the running of Ironman UK Triathlon at Wimbleball on 15th June. We run a 'service station' for the athletes on the cycling part of the event and they have to be fed and watered 'on the hoof' so to speak. This brings in a very large amount of sponsorship which goes to local charities.

Pub Quiz

Quiz presentationAt the Rotary pub quiz night, where over 50 teams took part across Devon simultaneously, The Red Lion in Oakford not only came first for our group of 6 pubs, but were the overall winners for the whole shebang! Note the magnificent cup.

Pictured here are President Gill, proprietor Andy and manager Jennie, and Garry, organiser of the quiz from Dawlish Water Rotary.

Over £400 for charity was raised by our own group of pubs - many thanks to all who took part.

Community Lunch for Shelterbox

Excmoor Rotary Shelterbox Lunch 2014This year marks the 10th annual Community Sunday Lunch in aid of Shelterbox, started after the tsunami in SE Asia. Since then the club has raised funds for some 70 Shelterboxes.

Nearly 140 people enjoyed a 3-course carvery lunch with excellent home-made puds and £400 was raised from the raffle. The final total raised is not yet known - watch this space.

Another new year, and a new member. The photo shows Rotarian Mike (left) welcoming our new member Derek, and giving him his pack of information about all things Rotary.

Santa's Outings

Santa's little elves work very hard doing the Christmas Collections.

Here we see just a little of Santa (just a bit of arm), but the eves are munching mince pies with gusto!

District Conference

Rotary 1170 Conference - Exmoor

This photo needs little explanation!

Rotary District 1170 Conference 2013 - members of the Exmoor Club are normally a sober lot (what?) and here they have come all over "western".

Guess which one is the President.

Bampton Charter Fair

Terry entertains at Bampton Charter FairAlways held on the last Thursday in October, this was the 755th since the Royal Charter.

Club members helped run various activities such as the Farm Auction, Crafts Fair, Local Produce & Traditional Skills, all the organisation of the non-stop music and street entertainers, and the publicity posters and programmes. Members also acted as Stewards on the day.

Some members also helped entertain the crowds in Bampton's Mummers' Play - on the right is Past President Terry as the Doctor! Actually he always looks like that...

Exmoor Rotary will have half the toll profits of the day to distribute to local charities - £2000 this year.

Visit by DG

District Governor visit

On Tuesday 8th October, District Governor Barry Rendal-Jones and his wife visited our club.

Barry was able to bring us up to date with the current developments in Rotary, particularly within the 1170 District. He emphasised particularly the need to adapt to a rapidly changing world in order to attract more members to the Rotary organization.

Senior Citizens' Outing

A lovely September day for the annual Senior Citizens outing organised by the Club - shown here are four of the 43 people who went by coach to enjoy Sidmouth, and of course have a scrummy cream tea.

Thanks to members Barbara and Christine for organising it all.

The event raised £453 for charity, although there were some difficulties caused by lack of water in the river!

Frances' Soiree

Frances annual 'At Home' in Dulverton was well supported, and in aid of three different charities.

As ever, the canapés were to die for!

Rotary Dictionaries - Bolham

Rotary Dictionaries - Bolham School

Here at Bolham School (July 24, last day of term) the Y6 pupils were presented with Rotary Dictionaries by President Gill. They are also seen wearing their special individual blue "leavers' sweatshirts".

Rotary Dictionaries - Bampton

Year 6 leavers from Bampton School were presented with Rotary Dictionaries on 16 July.

The event was at the school's end-of-term drama and music afternoon - hence the somewhat varied garb of the pupils who were dressed to represent 'water'.

Morebath Fete

Exmoor Rotary pitch at Morebath Fete

Morebath Fete was held on July 14, one of the hottest days of the year (over 30C). Sadly this meant low attendance at the event as people stayed indoor to keep cool or went to the coast.

However some £22 was raised for charity, and the chocolate was prevented from melting!

Exmoor Challenge Presentations

More presentations of trophies from the 2013 Exmoor Challenge. Here Past-President Alan congratulates the Junior Boys runners-up and winning teams, both from Uffculme School.

Emma Ridgewell-Howard head of the Hospice Fund Raising was also there to collect the cheque.

Bampton School Fete

Sadly no photos were taken of the stall at this Fete this year on June 30 but some £80 was taken from Chocolate Galore and Lucky Dip.

Youth Challenge Shield Presentation

The shield was presented to the girls of Hazelgrove School Team 4 as runners-up in the Juniors section of the competition this year.

Seen presenting the trophy is Past President Alan.
