Ethiopian Eye Clinic Project (3/3)

November 2008 - Frances, our International Chairman, has again visited the completed clinic.

Doughnuts are the same the world over...As you have no doubt heard, I am safely home from a great trip to Ethiopia. I was delighted to find the Spectacle Unit built, a most impressive building and well constructed. The church organised a sweet opening ceremony for me, so that I was able to 'cut the ribbon' and make a speech on behalf of Exmoor Rotary. The Unit consists of a large workshop, two stores, and an office. It was just having the final coats of paint and by now will be up and running, all the work benches, equipment, etc were being stored at the clinic and ready to be moved in. Rottenberg Rotary in Germany has also been contributing equipment to make this a really fantastic enterprise.

The T-shirts say it allThe eye clinic is constantly busy and frequently has a hundred patients turn up for examinations on any one day. They are managing about ten cataracts a day, with more when visiting teams of eye surgeons volunteer for a two week stint.

All in all, a very worthwhile service helping an incredibly large area with no other eye care faclilities. I have undertaken to support them for one more year to, hopefully, finish paying for it all!

The Club is immensely proud of what has been achieved thanks to the driving force, Frances, and her dedication to this project.
